When those "test" configurations work out as expected, we can consider buying a system with the required specs and move the working config to a physical system, that WE KNOW will work out. Also, it lets us try out test configurations to our heart's contempt, and quickly change RAM, Disk, Network connectivity without delays. If we need to create an SFTP or VPN service for a particular department/office, a media server for a new project, etc., we don't have to get new hardware or shuffle between existing dedicated servers to host something that might not be permanent. Our webserver runs in a Hyper-V, our helpdesk too (Spiceworks BTW!). without needing or buying a physical system for those purposes. With Hyper-V we can create any test station, server, etc. Why we virtualize? Well, budget limitations is one of many reasons that come to mind. Right now we have about 8 servers running under Hyper-V, and 3 or 4 client systems, all virtualized. We have a little "monster" we call the "Frankenserver" with 24-cores total for processing, 9Tb RAID disk space and 128Gb of RAM. With a 2012 Datacenter license, you can create/use as many Hyper-V VMs using Windows OSes as your resources permit, which for us is a big plus. At work, we use Hyper-V, its already there, integrates literally transparently with your existing domain/network infrastructure, and is easy to use. Personally I have used both Virtualbox and VMWare Workstation for non-production stuff. Hyper-V in his use could either be type 1 or type 2 depending on how it was installed. Virtualbox is type 2 (installs on an os). Then configured the Hypervisor and I was up and running in 15 minutes more or less, with a USB backup if the new version did not work. So when a new version was out, I just turned off the host, removed the USB, insert new USB and installed. The one thing that ESXi has that I do miss is USB install. With ESXi it was painfully slow to transfer files. We only have 3 hosts though, but the speed from Hyper-V to Hyper-V is awesome. I have not found anything that ESXi was better than Hyper-V. I think if I had a choice at the shop I'd like to have a go at ESXi.Īny reason why you don't like Hyper-V? I switched from ESXi to Hyper-V when 2012 was released (I am running Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 now). At the shop I use HyperV as it was already in place when I arrived and it's included with Server.

Unless you meant to say that it has to be installed on Windows as a role (Win 8/10 or Server 2008+) rather than installed as a application? The Hyper-V in Windows 8+ is more of a Type II than in Windows Server I use 2012 and then add the role so I can also use deduplication (and that is a whole other discussion but it works for what we do, one of our host has 21% savings, but we store separate VHD there) HOWEVER, there is a reason to use one or the other. However the 2012 Server burns more space and RAM than just the bare metal. I use both at work, and in the VM there is no performance. Installing 201R2 and then adding the role is Type I 1/2 (called Type 2, but it is not like virtual box).
